Snowbasin Resort 2002 Olympics | John Paul Lodge

For the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, we had the privilege of building the handcrafted log work for three stunning mountain lodges at Snowbasin Resort—host of the Downhill and Super G events. Originally one of only four North American companies pre-approved to bid on the main day lodge, we were awarded the project, and as our craftsmanship became evident, Snowbasin entrusted us with two additional lodges: the John Paul Lodge and the Needles Lodge, both perched near 10,000 feet in elevation.

The resort’s owners were committed to using environmentally responsible materials, requesting “dead-standing” spruce harvested in our home province of British Columbia. These tight-grained, 80–120-year-old logs provided incredible strength and beauty, perfectly suited to the dramatic alpine landscape.

The John Paul Lodge—accessible by high-speed quad chairlift—is designed around a striking two-story, four-sided fireplace, offering guests a warm and welcoming retreat with views of the valley and Olympic course start houses. Its octagonal form features eight massive log half-trusses radiating from the central hearth, creating a lodge as impressive as the scenery surrounding it.

These three lodges remain some of our most celebrated projects, proudly showcasing the durability, character, and timeless appeal of handcrafted log construction on a global stage.
